Australian Event Organiser Fined Over Cancelled Exhibition

An Australian event organiser on the Gold Coast in Australia has recently been fined $5,000 AUD by the Office of Fair trading (OFT).

Howard Kodra and his company Live and Local Expo were receiving payments for an exhibition to promote local business in Queensland. Each booking was promised an exhibition stall and promotional activities. After payment was received the event was rescheduled due to supposed issues with weather and then simply cancelled citing lack of exhibitors.

Sharon Simmers from the OFT stated that “Accepting payments for services and keeping that money despite delivering no service is a breach of the ACL and the OFT will vigorously pursue offenders,” Simmers said. This type of offending erodes confidence in the marketplace and anyone who encounters it is encouraged to report it immediately.”
